Black & Minority Ethnic (BME) Disabled People Training - Ensuring Inclusion, Rights & Choices

Aim:

To raise awareness of barriers and action strategies in order to increase the inclusion of black and minority ethnic disabled people.

Learning Objectives:

Background to aim and objectives of training:

Research into the lives of black and minority ethnic disabled people in Britain - children and adults - regularly highlights inaccessible information, inadequate and inappropriate services, high levels of unmet need, and a deep lack of confidence in mainstream public and voluntary sector agencies. It is clear that low take-up of services does not necessarily mean low levels of need.

There are pockets of good practice but, even so, evidence suggests that discrimination still appears commonplace. Black and minority ethnic disabled people fall between services and organisations for black and minority ethnic people, and those for disabled people. They experience discrimination both from within their own communities as well as from mainstream white services and communities.
