The New 'Age Regulations 2006'

Background

The Age Regulations were passed to implement the age provisions of the EU Framework Employment Directive.

In October 2006, Age discrimination became the 6th strand of unlawful discrimination in Great Britain.

More people complain of age discrimination rather than any other form of discrimination. The experience of other countries, which have already introduced age discrimination law suggest there may be a large number of cases.

How does this affect me?

At present, the Age Regulations only apply to discrimination in employment and vocational training.

What is discrimination under the new Age Regulations?

Direct discrimination on grounds of age, unless this is objectively justified
Indirect discrimination unless objectively justified
Harassment

Instructing other members of staff to discriminate against an employee on the grounds of age
